This is an installation that is sure to capture the imagination – I know my children had to be dragged off after a good hour of imaginative play.  Ernesto Neto’s The Island Bird is a beautiful piece of work that adults and children alike will be drawn too.

This structure is the ultimate cubby-house-meets-hammock, and then some.

We visited before the school holidays and I suspect during January this will be a very popular piece to visit – and given there is a limit of 5-6 people allowed onto the structure at one time you may find that your visit either involves a queue or has a time limit to allow others to have a turn, with that in mind it might be worth being a little strategic with your visit and avoiding the busy times.

Shoes will need to be removed and you’ll be pleased to learn that since we visited some seating has been added for those who are waiting.

As an adult I was intrigued as to how the structure was actually fabricated – clearly woven by hand: but how?  I have attempted knitting and always end in a tangle and so my mind was boggling as to how The Island Bird was actually made.
