What’s happening around Melbourne during the April School Holidays?


ACMI, 8-18 April.  School holiday programs and activities all about making stuff: learn coding, filmmaking, robotics, claymation, virtual reality and more.  For all the details www.acmi.net.au/events/school-holiday-program.

NGV International, various days.  NGV is running free drop-in activities in the Great Hall, check the website for full details.  Also, last days for Escher X Nendo – finishing Sunday 7 April, read our review.  Be among the first to experience Alexander Calder: Workshop for Kids, a hands-on installation with paper animal construction stations and a multimedia activity designing virtual public artworks, opens 5 April.

Don’t forget that IMAX has some fantastic 45-minute documentaries (as well as general release movies) that are a perfect quiet time if you are spending the whole day at the Museum.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival, 27 March – 21 April.  Loads of family-friendly shows – including the free Laugh Out Loud at Federation square.. for all the details www.comedyfestival.com.au.  Our 2018 reviews included Splash Test Dummies and Improvilicious (click here for the 2019 production).  MELBOURNE.

The Arts Centre.  These holidays learn the art of Magic thanks to a series of workshops, artscentremelbourne.com.au/whats-on/the-magic-workshop.  A David Walliams favourite comes to the stage for the first time, Billionaire Boy (6-14 April, recommended for ages 6+)  MELBOURNE

Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary. Prehistoric creatures and megabeasts are coming! These school holidays our zoos are going back in time.

SkyHigh, 9-21 April. Daily school holiday activities are taking place at the SkyHigh lookout point located atop the Dandenongs.   Activities include circus workshops, face painting, mini golf, games and much more.  FREE.   Click here for more information.  MT DANDENONG.

Kids Adventure Outdoors Angelsea, 13 + 14 April, this is a fun way to try out lots of different outdoor activities that you might not normally have access too.  Choose your own adventures (4 of them over the day) ranging from flying fox and rope course, trampolines, mini golf, surfing and so much more!  We went last year and had a blast.  More information here.  ANGLESEA

Sovereign Hill invites families to explore the working life of the goldfields.  The Blacksmith needs a new apprentice. There are animals to be fed. And Brown’s Confectionery Manufactory has lollies to make.  From Sat 6 April – Mon 22 April relive history and discover the lost trades with a range of exclusive workshops and free events that will transport you back to the busy goldfields. Good Friday Appeal Kids Day Out:  Loads of fantastic family-friendly activities – all for a Gold Coin donation to the Children’s Hospital to participate in most activities (FREE entry). We have been a few times and this is a massive and fun event (be sure to check out the Teddy Bears Hospital) that takes place on Good Friday, 19 April from 10am – 5pm!  Click here for more information.  SOUTH WHARF
