Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures
If you’re looking for an opportunity to see some crocodiles in action then get yourself to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures 40 minutes north of Cairns in Queensland. You will not be lacking in loads of croc action.
When: 8.30am – 5pm daily (except Christmas day)
Where: Captain Cook Hwy, Wangetti Beach, Queensland (40 min north Cairns, 20 min south Port Douglas)
Cost: Adult $35, child $17.50 or family (2 adults, 2 children) $87.50
If you go to Hartley’s on your own steam (i.e. not part of a tour group) your entry ticket can be validated when you leave so that you can return as many times as you like over the following two days. This was perfect for us – having not done much research (yes it only took me about 30 minutes to get into the swing of Queensland time after we touched down in Cairns) and leaving our visit until after lunch, we quickly realised when we arrived that there was no way we could see everything in just a few hours.
Throughout the park, and numerous times during the day, there are a number of presentations and shows – featuring all manner of wild life. With two major crocodile presentations to take in as well as a visit of the crocodile farm and a Lagoon Boat Cruise you are spoilt for live action croc encounters. They are seriously impressive beasts. And the croc handlers are incredible – and often entertaining, in a laid back Aussie kind of way (on occasions the audience was also joining in with a few hecklers).
But Hartley’s is much more than crocs – there is also a fabulous Cassowary Walk (don’t miss the morning feeding session), the Wildlife Discovery Trail (with loads of lizards, turtles and a few more crocs) and the Gondwana Gateway where you can meet some marsupials and get up close to the rather tame kangaroos.
