I am a bit excited about our King and Queen of Moomba this year – Jimmy Giggle is the perfect king to bring a smile to Moomba and Chrissie Swan is the queen of infectious laughs, so what a fabulous duo.
Moomba is our favourite Melbourne festival for families – and the City of Melbourne does it so well.
You can read some of our old posts here – otherwise jump on the Moomba website and plan your weekend now!
We got to ask our newly crowned king a few questions about his time at the top, and this is what he had to say.
What’s your favourite thing/s about Moomba?
It’s sense of community, the celebration of a wonderful city, the quirky traditions and its history!! What’s not to love? Oh and it’s free, so it’s a great chance to get out and enjoy an event with the family.
What are you looking forward to sharing with Lenny throughout the festival?
There will be plenty to do but I think he will love the Parade, there will be lots of different crazy floats to see.
Any tips for parents who haven’t been to Moomba before?
Plan a couple of things to do and go with the flow. Whether its sitting on the banks of the Yarra and watching the Birdman Rally or plonking down for the parade which this year weaves itself through Kings park, I think being relaxed and taking in the sights is the best way to experience it. And there are fireworks at 9:30 every night. Hooray!!
As King, have there been any unexpected parts of your role?
I wasn’t sure if I was able to enter the Birdman Rally, but when I got the green light I was super happy. I can’t wait for it. I spent most years as a kid either watching it there or on TV. The wonderful people at the City of Melbourne have facilitated everything for my entry into the Birdman so a big thank you to them. I’ll be raising money for Very Special Kids and flying my contraption into the Yarra at full speed!! It’s called the Owl Force One!! :). [editors note: vote for Jimmy, VSKs is a charity we love!]
Do you get to keep your crown?
Yes, Yes, Yes! Again the City of Melbourne are amazing making a bespoke crown for the occasion and they surprised my son Lenny with a crown for him too!! He will be crowned prince at Moomba hahahahah!!! 🙂

Now in its 64th year, Moomba will turn the banks of the Yarra River into an all-ages playground with music, entertainment, food and cultural diversity at the heart of it.
With new activities alongside perennial favourites including the Birdman Rally, Moomba Parade, carnival, water sports and skating competitions, this four-day festival is bringing some serious fun for all the family.

New attractions for 2018 include a dynamic Dance Zone, showcasing mesmerising performances and workshops for the entire family; The Dreaming Space, hosting magic shows, circus acts and pantomime performances; and Kids Yoga, free yoga sessions dedicated to building young healthy minds and bodies.
With a new route for 2018, the famous Moomba Parade will showcase the magic of Melbourne on Monday, 12 March.
