What’s happening around Melbourne during the July School Holidays?


ACMI, 2-11 July.  School holiday programs and activities all about making stuff: learn coding, filmmaking, robotics, claymation, virtual reality and more.  For all the details www.acmi.net.au/events/school-holiday-program. [Also note that ACMI’s exhibition Wonderland is still on – read OUR REVIEW]

NGV International, the latest installation for families, New York New York!, is FREE and designed for all ages – it compliments the visiting MoMA at NGV exhibition (well worth the visit with or without kids!)

Melbourne Museum, these holidays explore how Southeast Australian First Peoples moved across water with a mini canoe making activity.  FREE with entry.  melbournemuseum/whats-on/school-holiday-activities/

Don’t forget that IMAX has some fantastic 45-minute documentaries (as well as general release movies) that are a perfect quiet time if you are spending the whole day at the Museum.

Immigration Museum, explore the inspiring story of Mao’s Last Dancer, Li Cunxin.  Book into a 90 minute workshop which includes a kite making activity, storytelling of Li’s book The Peasant Prince and an introductory dance class with specialist ballet teachers.

The Arts Centre, 11-15 July.  These holidays join the fun with Lews Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark.  MELBOURNE

Disney on Ice, 5-10 July.  It’s the 100th year of Disney and so this ice extravaganza promises to be an epic celebration.  MELBOURNE

The Wizard of Oz.  See Dorothy and her friends in this classic musical live on stage at the Regent Theatre.  Read our review!  MELBOURNE

AFL Sunday Funday.  This winter kids go free to Sunday matches at the MCG, Etihad and other venues, check our review for all the details.  MELBOURNE

Skating At, pop up skating rinks have arrived at Southbank, St Kilda and Sorrento just in time for the school holidays and Melbourne’s winter! VARIOUS LOCATIONS

ArtPlay.  Plenty of creative fun to be had with a variety of different workshops for a range of ages. MELBOURNE

Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. has extended their season until 15 July.  This is an experience for the avid Avengers fan.  Read our review.  MELBOURNE

The Big Bubble Show is in Melbourne for one day only (July 5) – witness Samsam Bubbleman, holder of 10 Guinees Book of World Records, create bubble magic.  MELBOURNE

Sugar Republic, until 15 August.  This pop-up museum of all things sweet is a celebration of fun, pink and lollies.  You can read our review here.  FITZROY

Eureka Skydeck, 30 June – 15 July.  Test your mind over matter with the “Walk the Plank” virtual reality experience, included FREE with entry.  SOUTHBANK

Luna Park, 30 June – 15 July.  It’s Christmas in July at Luna Park with magical snowfalls and Santa (s)elfies with the Elves.  ST KILDA

Kew Junction, 2-13 July. Check out this series of affordable family friendly events and holiday activities.  KEW

Saltbush, 7-11 July.  A story of two two friends as they cross the Australian landscape, sharing the culture and language of Indigenous Australia, more details. WERRIBEE

Werribee Open Range Zoo.  Wild Nights is back – awesome activities for all night owls, including dazzling fire shows, marshmallow toasting, late night animal spotting and a secret garden to discover.  Rug up and expereince the Zoo in a totally different light from the 7-14 July – book ahead.  WERRIBEE

Sovereign Hill’s Winter Wonderland is back.  We absolutely love this event because it means we get to spend a full day exploring the wonders of Sovereign Hill decked out for Christmas in July followed by a fabulous winter lights spectical.  If you haven’t been make 2018 the year to go!  Read our review. Parks Victoria, 2-13 July.  Ranger guided activities called Junior Rangers run across the state every day these holidays – hurry though when these sessions go live they book out quickly!  These free activities take place in over 80 parks and reserves.  Click here for more information.  VARIOUS LOCATIONS.
