Kinder Whizz Tennis Program
The Kinder Whizz Tennis Program is a gentle and fun introduction to tennis lessons for children aged 3-5 years old.
When: various times in the mornings, 30 min for 3-year-olds and 45 mins for 4 to 5-year-olds
Where: Victorian Tennis Academy – located at both Orrong and Malvern Tennis Centres
Cost: $70/month for 30 min and $75 month for 45 min. This means they are members of the club so receive 25% off racquets, $5 member court hire, one free session at our “Whizzes Weekend Workout” (1 hour session once a term full of fun tennis games, teamwork activities and various other sports) and 1 free holiday clinic credit (valued at $50).
I remember when Immi was three she was just old enough to sit and watch a bit of the Australian Open with me on the TV – she also got her first tennis racquet from eager grandparents and we messed about in the driveway at home with a tennis ball. Luckily for her, she didn’t inherit my inept ball skills and she could actually hit it back.
I know if Kinder Whizz had existed back then she would have loved it… instead, she had to stand on the side of the tennis court and longingly watch the big kids, waiting to be a bit older. Fast forward to today and she’s been having lessons, taking part in holiday clinics and joining in tournaments for nearly seven years! Charlie is the same. They love their tennis and are now at a level where they can comfortably join in the family Easter tournament (it sounds grander than it is, I promise!) and play against uncles, aunties and grandparents.
Tennis (like skiing and golf) is one of those sports that you can enjoy all your life and doesn’t require a whole team to make a game possible. It’s also a great outdoor activity.
Kinder Whizz has been designed to offer a “creative, imaginative and educational environment” to “build the skills for an active life”. The Vic Tennis Academy lessons focus on improving motor skills, coordination, teamwork, basic fundamentals and tennis skills in classes of six children per coach. Classes take place at the courts in Orrong Park and Union St Park – but also extend to schools and kinders (eg. Malvern Memorial Kinder where they coached 26 children once a week as part of their curriculum in term 4).
The sessions are based on themes such as jungle, space and car racing which enables the children to use their imagination. The sessions are about fun and games with ball skills developing coordination and getting the kids familiar with hitting a ball. Don’t expect your three-year-old to be quite ready for the Nelson Easter tournament, but, hopefully, they will be able to hit some forehands, backhands and volleys.
What else do you need to know? Well, you can BYO your own tennis racquet or use one provided… and you’re welcome to do a FREE trial class to see if your preschooler likes Kinder Whizz!
