Open House Melbourne – Victoria Police Mounted Branch
MEETOO IS A PROUD SUPPORTER OF THE OHM CHILDREN’S PROGRAM
When: 10am to 4pm – Saturday and Sunday
Where: Corner of Grant and Dodds Streets, South Melbourne
Cost: FREE
What to do: Come along and see riding and training demonstrations with the horses of Victorian Police.
Last year the mini reviewers made this our first stop on our Open House day out, and it was one of the (many) highlights. We were taken on a tour of the stables where we could see examples of the mounted police uniforms as well as some of the protection gear the horses might wear. We were told about how the horses are used and we got to see some of the horses in their stables – in the distance. We were also given some background about the building we were standing in.
These are serious working horses, so no patting or pony rides kids – but amazing to hear what they can do and see the inside of their living quarters (which also happen to be architecturally interesting).
After visiting the stables it’s into the indoor equestrian arena next door to watch some of the horses training – that was pretty cool.
My tip – you might have to wait, the tours start every 15 minutes (well they did last year) and so if you’ve just missed a group then you will have to wait for the next one. Also the groups can only be a certain size. If you don’t want to miss the horses then perhaps make this one your first stop for the day!

Thanks for the tip Nat – we were quite lucky as it was raining quite heavily when we arrived (I suspect any sane person was waiting in their car for it to pass) but I can imagine this venue will be super popular again in 2013
We went last year – highly recommend, check the OHM twitter feed before you go as the que was rather large when we arrived late in the day.
