The Stables of Como

The Stables of Como

We love a good park that offers a great coffee nearby – Como Park is a fantastic park filled with massive hills (perfect for roley-poleys), a huge oval and a great playground. With the addition of The Stables of Como, located in the grounds of Como House next door, Como Park is now complete.

When:  Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, Sunday 10am to 5pm.  Reservations highly recommended: 9827 6886

Where:  Como House & Garden, Cnr Williams Road & Lechlade Ave SOUTH YARRA

Review

Como Park and Como House are both fond places of my childhood – and I have made trips there with the children on numerous occasions… however for regular park visits we tend to go elsewhere because the nearest cafe to Como Park is across a busy main road and at the furthest point from playground (we do love Kanteen but our focus when we visit there is always drawn to the water and Herring Island).  That was until now.

Finally someone with some style, service skills, and top notch food and beverage knowhow has taken over the rustic stables area at Como House and given it the ultimate make over.  The old stables at the back of Como House have become impossibly hip.

On a cold, blustery, rainy winter weekday a girlfriend and I bundled the kids up and decided to check out The Stables of Como for a coffee – from the street you wouldn’t even know it existed, we entered a very nondescript service entry for Como House off Lechlade Ave and there, in the original facilities area within the stables building, is South Yarra’s newest hidden gem.  And while you would never guess from the outside – inside it was packed, and it was only 11.55am.  Thankfully there were plenty of free tables outside (no heating, but under cover) and this suited our boys who explored every nook and cranny (and delighted in doing laps around the buildings/garden).

It’s not really a child friendly venue (although I do need to mention there was certainly nothing unfriendly about the staff or service) as there was no real room for prams inside and there is no kids menu, also once the kids start roaming it’s very easy for them to disappear out of sight in numerous directions (and the grounds themselves have three gates to escape from).  However that said – the park next door is fantastic and the grounds of Como House are great for a walk and a run around… and on a nicer day (when it’s not 14C and raining) it would be a glorious spot for a picnic – and The Stables offer a picnic menu complete with rug, cutlery, crockery and, in some cases, games.

My friend and I both agreed that this would be a gorgeous spot to come back to with our mums or mother’s group (sans kids).
