Top 5 Things To Do (from home) These Winter School Holidays

Melbourne is easily the best city in Australia (maybe the world) when it comes to events, activities, places to be – things to see… so I am pretty sure I’m not alone in feeling a little tired of not seeing anyone and not venturing anywhere.

We’ve been resourceful and upbeat, but honestly: blergh, I don’t know about you – I am feeling a little flat. And even I am bored of Meetoo’s instagram feed (yes, our dog is cute, but you’d be mistaken for thinking I was a pet influencer, not a family events reviewer!).

Lucky for you, no more dog pics [today] – I am handing the reigns over to someone else.  I am so excited to feature this special guest post from Clare Christensen, Arts Centre Melbourne. The best part is – you don’t just have to be in Melbourne, anyone anywhere can join in!  So what are you waiting for…

Top 5 Things To Do (from home) These Winter School Holidays

Clare Christensen, Associate Producer, Families and Children at Arts Centre Melbourne.

For many families – like my own – the thought of getting through another lot of school holidays in isolation (or with limited contact with others) is a little daunting.  In fact, it comes with a bit of sadness as we won’t be welcoming families into our theatres just yet. However, there’s lots of engaging entertainment you can enjoy in our Arts Centre Melbourne Together With You Program. Here is my list of Top 5 Things To Do (from home) These Winter School Holidays to bring you and your little ones some joy. They certainly have the tick of approval from my 3 and 5 year olds!

  1. Watch A Not So Traditional Story (ages 5+) a story for our times, written by award-winning playwright Nathan Maynard and produced by Terrapin Puppet Theatre.  Grab a comfy spot on the couch, and take your family on an epic quest, full of adventure, laughs and Tasmanian Aboriginal culture.  This beautiful production was originally performed on our Fairfax Studio stage last year, and this is a rare opportunity to see this important story of friendship and identity. Available from Monday 6 July, 12pm AEST for 10 days only.
  2. Enjoy Mountain Goat Mountain (ages 5+) a beautiful at home theatre experience for families to do together. The development of this work was supported by Arts Centre Melbourne and was created entirely in isolation by a brilliant team of artists from Threshold.  You’ll be invited to step into an imaginary world of hidden tunnels, lava pits and underwater caves without ever leaving your home. In this interactive journey, families will be guided with audio through a series of playful activities before being carried along through an immersive soundscape. Happy travels adventurers!  $12.95 for a 30 day access family pass.
  3. The Channel: Home Studio – Clowning Workshop (ages 9-11) with the incredibly talented Holly Austin. Your children will be shown how to create a world to perform in, using only their voice, body and imagination.  This is such a fun offering, and in fact there is an additional workshop for younger siblings (ages 5-8), so no one misses out.  I encourage you to also check out the other workshops from The Channel: Home Studio.
  4. Boogie to Australian Music Vault – Family Jams (all ages) – Get the whole family dancing around the living room with this playlist of Aussie music songs for kids! Do the Loco-motion with Kylie, dream about growing up with Tim Minchin, jump around to Regurgitator and boogie to the Teeny Tiny Stevies, Sampa the Great, The Wiggles, Paul Kelly, Justine Clarke and more.
  5. Experience Kids Home Publishing (ages 2-102) a six-part series from Kids Own Publishing and Convent Kids, which celebrates the art of book making, creativity, collaboration and storytelling.  This hands on series will inspire you to make your very own book, with inspiration from amazing artists such as author/illustrator Anna Walker and Wurundjeri educator Mathew Gardiner. We’ve featured this in our latest Top Picks for Families Edition. There are so many great works available online created by Artists from Australia and afar – we’ve handpicked our favourite one’s for you to enjoy at home. Explore all 5 editions online and enjoy hours of creative experiences like this one!
