Top three things to visit or do in Gippsland with kids

Okay Gippsland is massive – but to give you an idea of the breadth of experiences Gippsland offers, here are our three favourite things to do in Gippsland with kids.

Howling Husky Sled Tours
Mt Baw Baw, open June – August (until the snow melts really)
The husky sled ride that Charlie and I experienced last winter was one of those experiences we will never forget – ask Charlie what his favourite dog is and still to this day it’s the husky… and when you experience these guys in action they will be your new favourite dog too.  A husky sled tour is not a cheap experience but given it’s something you are unlikely to have many opportunities to do I would urge you to add this to your bucket list.

State Coal Mine
Garden Street, WONTHAGGI, open 10am – 4.30pm daily, closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and ANZAC Day.
If you like history, stories of surviving the odds and seeing first hand the conditions of our grandparents and great grandparents – this is a feast for the imagination and sure to inspire all ages.  Not only is there plenty to see and do – but some of the guides, who still volunteer their time, actually worked in the mine or grew up around the mine – so you can ask them first hand about their experiences and memories!  (But hurry I suspect in a few years they might have retired).  The Wonthaggi State Coal Mine is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere.

Metung
GIPPSLAND LAKES
Metung is a tiny, yet beautiful, village located on a peninsula in the Gippsland Lakes.  Separating the lake and the ocean is a small strip of land that enjoys local wildlife, including pelicans and swans, and subdued ocean breezes.   With its mild temperatures (year average between 25-14C) it has been dubbed Victoria’s Riviera.  Pack your bags for a long weekend as this secluded slice of heaven is a 3.5 hour drive from Melbourne.  We highly recommend visiting during summer to take advantage of the water.
