Warrnambool in Winter {family getaway}

This winter Meetoo contributor Sally is returning for the fourth year running to her favourite winter getaway with friends and family: Warrnambool in Winter with a young family.Warrnambool in Winter

We just love migrating to the largest city on the Great Ocean Road, favouriting the same time as the wild winds and the gigantic peaceful and majestic fluking Southern Right whales, famously birthing here June- July (note: the gigantic whales and their frolicking calves can often be viewed over multiple visits from Logans Beach lookout or dunes up until October). Warrnambool (or land between two rivers), is just over 3 hrs or 264km south-west of Melbourne, situated on the Princes Highway – Port Fairy to the west and Great Ocean Road on the east.

The scenic coastal promenade, ‘Warrnamboolians’ main thoroughfare is a mere 9km long, Starting at Logan’s Beach, whale watching lookout, around to Lady Bay foreshore and over the footbridge and sandstone cliffs to Thunder Point or veer right towards Lake Pertobe reserve.Warrnambool in Winter

Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground is a tourist destination in itself. A 20-hectare adventure playground it’s a godsend for parents providing not just hours but days of entertainment and enjoyment for the kids. There are several designated playground areas to access and every possible playground apparatus dispersed amongst these locations with:-

  • wooden structures
  • all abilities swings
  • tunnel slides
  • tic-tac-toe
  • ramps, steps & walkways
  • scramble walls
  • mats & bars
  • huge metal spiral slides
  • five-person stand-up carousel
  • spinning tyre swing
  • dual slides
  • themed springers
  • rowing boat
  • stand-on skateboard springers
  • two mechanical sand diggers
  • four-person pommel bounce
  • monkey bars
  • big sandpits
  • giant slides
  • steering wall
  • climbing walls & ladders
  • nautical structures with steering wheels
  • coordination & dexterity discs on a vertical poles
  • wooden play shop front & a designated toddlers area

Our favourite is the multiple platformed flying fox tower for the two opposing facing fabulous downhill flying fox for different skills sets (one with a safety seat and harness and smooth landing base, the other with slide on/off handle seating similar to a ski lift).  {Editor’s note: this sounds AWESOME!}

Then there’s a dumped tyre pile for climbing and disappearing into, a maze that is not difficult to lose the kids, as you can see little feet under the walls and leads you to a staired lookout tower. The stunning visual street artwork on the wooden walls of the maze is continually evolving and changing.

Enjoy walking the tracks around the lakes and find the rocky waterfall and various water climbing features and channels to a pond.  Let’s not forget the aquatic transport that can be hired for 15 minutes sets – motor fun boats, canoes, paddle boats and water bikes.

The Lake Pertobe precinct also offers vast open expanses of lush lawns for delightful picnic areas and plenty of sheltered BBQ facilities.  Try your hand at lawn tennis courts, have a few laps of the athletics track and there’s even a nearby skateboard park.

Adjoining the adventure playground, adjacent to the foreshore promenade also on Pertobe Road is the colourful fun-filled Mini Golf by the Sea owned and run by John Holland & family.  Try your luck at the 18 hole compact mini golf course and then bounce away on the famous jumping pillow.  A full morning or afternoon of fun for the whole family guaranteed.

We stayed at the impressive fully self-contained River Vista of the Hopkins (Stayz ref: 101185) with stunning river views from upstairs and downstairs living areas, as well as the massive master bedroom with en-suite including a luxurious spa bath.  There are plenty of bedrooms, beds and bedding arrangements. If you have an even larger group or another family to accommodate River View Holidays have a larger house again (River View Heights) on the same street. Lorraine & Russell your hosts will ensure your stay is relaxing and enjoyable, both properties within easy strolling distance to the river jetty and amenities.
