Ben Elton’s production is a silly plot twist on Queen tracks, an escape from reality; an electric, energizing fantasy.  Set In 2350, GlobalSoft Corporation has taken over iPlanet (aka Earth) and is controlled by Killer Queen, a video game character who uploaded herself into reality. Conformity is celebrated and uniformity enforced – independent thought forbidden, live music is banned and friendships illegal.

A rebellion group of kids who want real friends (as apposed to online ones) and their own names (not user IDs) rise up to fight against manufactured pop.

An insightful use of iconic Queen songs whilst making a joke of humanity, pop music culture and musicals, created an amusing performance.  We Will Rock You takes place on a mostly empty stage with minimal theatrical props, concert digital strobe lighting rig and a very loud sound system.

The performance included some “Australianised” content with up to date cultural pop references including Lady Gaga, Geoff from the Wiggles, Beaver, MJ and Gangnam Style. It’s a performance of satirical one-liners and air punching at any opportunity throughout.

The standout principal cast members were Jaz Flowers as Ozzie, a shooting star leaping through the sky like a tiger, she owns it but unfortunately for her character “only the good die young”. Casey Donovan is “Killer Queen, dynamite with a laser beam, guaranteed to blow your mind…anytime”.  And of course Erin Clare as Scaramouche, doing the Fandango (what exactly is… “doing the fandango”?) whilst becoming a champion of the world.

The band includes Music Supervisor, Brian May – QUEEN founding member, guitarist & songwriter – and was magnifico, playing like it was their last dance under pressure, even taking their bows and curtain calls.

Ever asked yourself “what is rock n roll?” Surely if this show does not know, just open your eyes and look up to the skies for any way the strobe lighting blows. The show was indeed a playful, fun rock celebration, taking us through 24 of Queen’s legendary hits in just under 2.5 hrs. Oh all right then – I have to say it,

“long live rock n roll!”
